TOUR PREVIEW LUNCHEON

What a better start to the holiday season than by attending the Preview Luncheon for the 57th annual Kappa Kappa Gamma Holiday Homes Tour. Besides enjoying a festive holiday luncheon, you then have the privilege of touring all four homes from 2:00-4:00 that afternoon before they are opened to the public.

This year, Halls is one of our presenting sponsors. Through them, we are fortunate to have renowned jewelry designer Joan Hornig as our luncheon speaker. There will be pieces from her collection on display and for sale at the luncheon. Proceeds from the sale of jewelry will benefit our recipients.

Each attendee will receive a gift bag from Halls.

Special holiday treats await during our raffle. There will be two items that will brighten your season:
• $1,000 shopping spree at Halls
• A weekend at The InterContinental overlooking the Plaza lights

The cost of individual tickets is $85 or you may purchase a table for 10 for $850. Seating is limited so do not hesitate in sending your checks payable to Kappa Kappa Gamma Holiday Homes Tour to: Polly Wolbach, 8505 Lee Boulevard, Leawood, Kansas 66206. Please include any seating preferences in your reply.

This luncheon is open to Kappas and Kappa friends with whom you would like to share a holiday tradition.

Editor’s note: Polly Wolbach is chairman of this event along
with her new daughter-in-law, Hillary Bascom Wolbach.

NEW THIS YEAR

The Shadow Buddies Foundation will be providing 1000 “buddies” to all the children served by the three recipient organizations. These muslin dolls are “condition specific”, i.e. they replicate various medical conditions faced by children. Each has heart shaped eyes and a big smile.

The idea began 13 years ago when an eight-year-old boy, who had undergone 25 surgeries, told his mother he wished he had a friend just like him. Together they created Shadow Buddies. From the original four (heart, ostomy, day surgery and oncology), the shadow buddies family has grown to include 25 different conditions including an angel buddy. The Shadow Buddies Foundation distributes these dolls to medically challenged children all over the world.

Thanks to Anne Peterson for making this happen.

LOYALTY AWARD GOES TO BARBARA MORIARTY

This year’s Loyalty Award winner, Barbara Moriarty received the
traveling silver key from Jill Winn, who shared the honor last year with Janet Warren. “It was hard keeping a secret,” said her mother, Jean Lundell, who also was honored by receiving her 65-year pin at
the Founders Day luncheon, held October 17 at Mission Hills Country Club.

PATRONS PARTY

An overflow crowd is expected at the Patrons Party this year. The response has been so overwhelming that our hosts, Adele and Don Hall, have graciously agreed to extend the party to two nights – Thursday, November 13, and Friday, November 14. In addition, they are generously providing all the food and drinks at the 6:30-8:30 events. Nan Vail and Linda Hosler are chairmen.

Both evenings will feature a special performance by Swedish saxophonist Johan Stengard and his pianist Andreas Landegren. Tour chairman Anne Peterson is responsible for the appearance of these internationally known performing artists. Kappas who heard them at a Tour preview event will attest to their soulful, beautiful music and can understand why they have performed with Michael Bolton, ABBA, Celine Dion, Lena Horne and Sammy Davis, Jr. It will be an unforgettable evening.

2009 TOUR RECIPIENTS SERCH UNDERWAY

The Tour Proceeds Committee, under the leadership of Susan Cope, is now accepting applications for the 2009 Holiday House Tour. Any organization wishing to apply must have a Kappa sponsor and must
be in the field of rehabilitation. Call 913-381-2030 or email sckc@kc.rr.com for information or to obtain an application form. The application deadline is Friday, December 5, 2008

2008 TOUR RECIPIENTS

Three agencies with overlapping missions will receive the profits from this year’s Tour. A portion also goes to the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation.

The Child Protection Center is a child advocacy and referral agency founded in 1996 to assist children who are victims of abuse in Jackson, Cass and Lafayette Counties in Missouri. They also provide support services such as crisis intervention and specialized counseling for families.

MOCSA or Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault offers a variety of treatments for those affected by child sexual abuse and assault. It exists to lessen the ill effects of this abuse through prevention, interaction, treatment and advocacy.

Sheffield Place is a transitional living program for homeless mothers and their children. The mission is to empower single mothers to break out of the cycle of homelessness and poverty and become self sufficient. This year Sheffield Place will provide shelter and supportive services to more than 30 families.

THE 2008 KKG ORNAMENT

Irma Star’s beautiful ornaments are becoming a tradition at the House Tour. For the fourth consecutive year, her Kappa-themed decorations will be available for sale at the Tour. The 2008 version is a butterfly; previous years featured a fleur de lis, an owl and a gingerbread girl. All will be for sale at the shop. If you haven’t already started a collection, now is the time! They are $25 each and a genuine keepsake as well as a thoughtful gift.

Irma is a noted artist whose works are on permanent display at the Smithsonian in Washington DC.
