Dear
Kappa Sisters,
January can be my most difficult month. After enjoying the activities
of the Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve
rush I find myself in January at a much slower pace. I begin to miss
the fun
and excitement of the last three months and I don’t know what
to do! For me, the remedy to this year’s slow beginning was our
Kappa Winter Party. The Winter Party was on held on Saturday January
21st, at
the historical home of Mike and Sherry Coughlin. We enjoyed a time of
sharing memories of Christmas, exchanging what our kids and grandkids
were up to, talking about the upcoming RIF
project, meeting new Kappa’s, and visiting about our successful
60th Homes Tour! Yes the Winter Party was just what I needed to pull
me out of my January slump! Thank you to Katherine Fowler and Natalie
Shoup for organizing our party, and a very special thanks to Mike and
Sherry Coughlin for opening their home to KC Kappa’s.
As many of us discussed at the Winter Party, our 60th Homes Tour held
December 6th and 7th was a huge success. We have Vice-President Chairs;
Marissa Schaffner, Julie Scheideggger and Risë Strasser to thank
for our successful Tour. As we await the news regarding our tour results,
I would like to thank you Kappa’s for once again stepping up
to volunteer to make our yearly fundraiser a success. Sixty years is
quite an accomplishment and wouldn’t Isabelle Helmers be happy
to know her “vision to give back to the community” is a
Kappa and Kansas City tradition. As of 2011 we have given over 1.7 million
dollars to local non for profits and our own Kappa Foundation. Way
to go KC Kappa!
January 9th united more than 50 Kappa Actives and their moms. The Kappa
Actives event took place at the Nottingham Forest South Clubhouse at
140th and Antioch Road in Overland Park, Kansas. Our evening involved
a bit of
shopping, (thanks to local vendors), a wonderful hot chocolate bar
with desserts, and of course fellowship between chapters. Please see
the pictures in this Krier of some Theta, Omega, Gamma Alpha and Gamma
Nu Kappa’s who
attended. Thank you to Lyn Carnes, Marcy Langhoffer and Barbara Perry
for organizing our event.
On Friday, January 27th many of us enjoyed our Kappa Social Owl event
at the Comedy City Improv Show. Please note that Kappa’s of all
ages are invited to these night social events. The next Kappa Owl event
will be a self-defense class taught on March 2nd at Alido Academy in
Olathe, Kansas. We invite you to come and bring your daughter or a
friend to this event. The cost is $10.00 per person. Look for an evite
sent to your email in late April to RSVP or contact Missy Andeel.
Our February 14th Kappa Association Meeting will be at the home of
Lynne O’Connell. We have an informative program scheduled
in honor of Valentine’s Day, “Women and Our Hearts” given
by Karin Morgan of the Ku Med Center. The meeting is at 11:30; our
program will begin at 11:45 followed by a short meeting. Refreshments
will be served at 11:30. Please RSVP to the evite to be sent in early
February or contact Nan Vail with your reservation.
Take time to review our Bylaws as they have been modified this year.
You may review in several ways; you will find a copy in this edition
of our Krier, and they will be sent to all dues paying members via
email. Please note that these will be voted on at the February 14th
Association Meeting. Contact Judy Horn with any questions
or concerns. Thank you to Judy and her committee for their dedication
in reviewing, revising, editing and typing to bringing our bylaws into
2012.
Our KC Kappa RIF project will be Wednesday, February 22nd at The Children’s
Place. We are accepting book donations of “The Snowy Day” by
Ezra Keats. If you would like to donate a book, bring to the February
14th Association Meeting or drop by the home of Janet Warren or Jill
Winn.
I wish you all the best in 2012, and look forward to seeing you at
our Kappa events!
Loyally,
Jennifer Garrett Hart
